AN ACT TO AMEND THE UNIVERSITIES ACT, NO. 16 OF 1978

|
BE it enacted by the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka as follows :
|
|

Short title and date of operation.
|
1. This Act may be cited as the Universities (Amendment) Act, No. 26 of 1983, and shall come into operation on such date as the Minister may appoint by Order published in the Gazette.
|
|
Amendment of heading to Part XIV of Act No. 16 of 1978.
|
2. The following heading is hereby substituted for the heading ” STUDENT RELATIONS COUNCILS AND OTHER ASSOCIATIONS” appearing in Part XIV of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978, as amended by Act No. 7 of 1985 (hereinafter referred to as the “principal enactment”) :

Replacement of section 112 of the principal enactment.
|
3. Section 112 of the principal enactment is hereby re- pealed and the following section substituted therefor ;
|
” University Students Union Faculty Students Union. &c.
|
112.
|
(1) Each Higher Educational Institution shall have a University Students Union whose composition, duties and functions shall be as specified in the Schedule to this Act.
|
|
(2) Each Faculty of a Higher Educational Institution shall have a Facility Students; Union whose composition, duties and functions shall be as specified in the Schedule to this Act.
|
|
(3) The governing authority of each Higher Educational Institution shall prescribe by by-law, the mode of conducting elections for the election of office-bearers of the unions referred to in subsections (1) and (2) and the duties and functions of such office bearers. “,
|

|
Repeal of Section 114 of the principal enactment.
|
4. Section 114 of the principal enactment is hereby re- pealed.
|
|
Amendment of section 115 of the principal enactment.
|
5. Section 115 of the principal enactment is hereby amended as follows:
|
(1) by the substitution in subsection (1) of that section. for all the words from ” A Higher Educational Institution ” to ” recognize any union,”, of the words ” A Higher Educational Institution may, recognize any Union”;
|
|
(2) by the substitution in subsection (2) of that section. for the words “Subject to the provisions of. section 117, the governing authority”, of the words “The governing authority”.
|
|
|
Amendment of section 116 of the principal enactment.
|
6. Section 116 of the principal enactment is hereby amended as follows :
|
(1) by the substitution for the words “Student Relations Council, or ” occuring in that section, of the words ” University Students Union and the Faculty Students Union, or”; and
|
|
(2) by the substitution, in the marginal note to that sec-twin for the words “Student Relations Council.”, of the words ” University Students Union and the Faculty Students Union.”.
|

Repeal of section 117 of the principal enactment.
|
7. Section 117 of the principal enactment is hereby repealed.
|
|
Addition of Schedule to the principal enactment.
|
8. The following Schedule is hereby added at the end of the principal enactment:
