Higher Education (Amendment)


AN ACT TO AMEND THE HIGHER EDUCATION ACT, No. 20 OF 1966.

BE it enacted by the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and the House of Representatives of Ceylon in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: –
Short title.
1. This Act may be cited as the Higher Education (Amendment) Act, No. 5 of 1969.
Insertion of new section 88A in Act, No. 20 of 1966.

“Special provision relating to the conferment of degrees on certain students.
(1) The following new section is hereby inserted immediately after section 88, and shall have effect as section 88A, of the Higher Education Act, No. 20 of 1966:-

88A. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in any other provision of this Act, any student of a, University who falls within either of the categories specified in paragraphs (a) and (b) of this section may be conferred with the degree of the University of Ceylon by the Senate of the University of Ceylon on the basis of results approved by the Senate of the University of Colombo established by Order made under section 34 and published in Gazette Extra- ordinary No. 14.752/1 of June 9, 1967. and the name and style of which University was altered to University of Ceylon, Colombo, by Order made under section 36 and published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 14,806/18 of June 18, 1968:

(a) any student who was admitted to the Colombo Branch of the University of Ceylon prior to October 1, 1967; and
(b) any student who was admitted to the University of Colombo on October 1, 1967.”.
(2) The amendment made in the Higher Education Act, Mo. 20 of 1966, by sub-section (1) shall be deemed for all purposes to have come into force on October 1, 1967.
